Disease Symptom List
or
Coldwater Aquaria and Pond Fish Disease Chart - Tropical Freshwater Fish Disease Chart - Marine Fish Disease Chart

SYMPTOMS
2. Body-rot, fin-rot, tail-rot, patches of angry red tissue on body, haemorrhagic discolouration of vent (anal) area of abdomen; any or all of the above symptoms if not promptly treated may quickly deteriorate into the following terminal symptoms:- bloated appearance of abdomen (but scales Not standing off body), Exophthalmia ("Popeye"), abnormally high respiratory rate (i.e. faster than 90 gill beats/min.).

DISEASE
BACTERIAL - caused by several species of rod-shaped, motile, (="mobile"), Gram-negative bacteria. Most species belong to the Aeromonas genus. Disease can be caused by overfeeding, poor hygiene / filtration, ammonia / nitrite toxicity.

TROPICAL FRESHWATER & COLDWATER AQUARIA
In a soft, acid water aquarium, improve the water quality and decrease bacteria-count with Waterlife 6.5 BUFFER or HUMAQUAT. Use MYXAZIN as a water treatment, and (if possible) by brush application to infected area. Increase aeration and filtration to maximum acceptable level. If only Mollies are affected by greyish-white body film remove to a 10%-20% ULTRAMARINE seawater solution before commencing treatment. Or add 10% ULTRAMARINE seawater to aquarium if salinophobic species are not present

SEAWATER AND BRACKISHWATER
Stop ALL feeding immediately if possible. Otherwise reduce feeding to minimum possible level. Turn aeration/filtration to maximum. Turn off all SEACOAL (carbon) filtration. Commence MYXAZIN treatment as soon as possible (fish only systems) since these diseases proceed rapidly in seawater. Where size of fish permits use MYXAZIN topically (i.e. brush application) as well as a water treatment. CLOWNFISHES, where no whitish body film exists, if no improvement by day 2, see Trichodinia, (No. 11).

GARDEN PONDS
Carry out a very slow, total water change by trickling a garden hose into the pond at the "high" side and letting the polluted water overflow onto the lawn at the "low" end. This should take 24 hrs. to complete and is continued until the water is crystal clear. Stop all feeding and run fountain/waterfall/aeration continuously at full power. Use MYXAZIN P as both a water treatment and topically. Commence feeding when symptoms subside.

PREVENTION
a) By regular usage of Waterlife super-sensitive Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate test kits, so regulate the amount of feeding to ensure that free ammonia/nitrite NEVER appear in your aquasystem. With correctly designed filtration system, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate should never be allowed to climb above minimal levels.
b) Never overfeed:
c) Never use "spoiled" foods:
d) Never use frozen sea foods, daphnia, tubifex etc., which have not been gamma-ray irradiated:
e) Always quarantine doubtful looking fish in MYXAZIN/P-treated water:
f) ALWAYS prevent vitamin deficiency in captive fishes by using VITAZIN.
To précis the above in a few words, what one is really saying is:- Disease in fishes, as in all creatures, is always an inevitable response to STRESS EXPOSURE. Stress in the aquatic enviroment can assume many forms, i.e. chemical (=pH, nitrogeneous toxins), physical (=temp., S.G., oxygen tension), biological (=poor feeding, vitamin deficiency, etc.), psychological (=aggression, Clumsy handling). Avoid stress = no disease.

After reading the above please refer to the General Notes for further information.

Please note: If symptoms persist it may be necessary to contact a veterinarian for a prescription treatment.
